Arts in the One World: Sharing Strategies for Change

transdisciplinarity • interconnectivity • context-based practice

January 27-29, 2011

Arts in the One World (AOW) is an annual interdisciplinary gathering comprised of presentations, performances, conversations, workshops, installations and screenings hosted by California Institute of the Arts’ School of Theater, presented in collaboration with the participation of CalArts as a whole. Students, educators, change-makers and creative practitioners from within and outside of educational institutions are invited to discuss and present on the ways artistic, political and social purposes intersect.

This year we invite the sharing of strategies to build artists’ and communities’ capacity and agency for social change. We believe that a vital creative practice opens imaginative space for, cultivates, and ignites transformative action. We come together for learning, exchange, inspiration, practice and play. We seek to convene culture workers whose ways of creating and being in the world demonstrate:

  • transdisciplinarity – integrative knowledge sharing and exchange that transforms the creative process itself
  • interconnectivity – the idea that all parts of a system interact with and rely on one another by the fact that they occupy the same system, as in ecology, or internet, or community, …
  • context-based practice – work that privileges, investigates and applies social, cultural, political, economic, historical context; practice that engages content or situations that create meaning and relevance

First convened in January 2006 by Erik Ehn, AOW at CalArts is linked to it’s sister Arts in the One World conference at Brown University.

The conference is a local anchor of an ongoing artistic exchange CalArts conducts with the Interdisciplinary Genocide Studies Center (IGSC) in Rwanda, where each summer a group of students, faculty, and professionals travel to Rwanda and Uganda, to study genocide and acts of mass violence, exploring the ways in which art participates in processes of renewal.
